Potty Training Your Dog Is Easy With The Right Command

Potty Training Your PuppyAs amazing at it sounds, you can train your puppy or older dog to go to the bathroom on command.  If you will continue to repeat a word while your puppy is doing what  you want him to do, he will associate that word with the action.  When your puppy is outside relieving himself, repeat the phrase, ‘go potty’.

If you will do this enough, your puppy will soon begin to associate the phrase ‘go potty’ with relieving himself.  This will train the puppy to go potty on command.  Word association is the easiest and best way to train your puppy.

On the other hand, if your puppy goes to the bathroom inside the house, you can say with a firm voice, ‘No, go outside,’  then take the puppy outdoors.   After a while, the puppy will use this word association with something they should not do indoors but outdoors.

You should never spank a dog when you are using command training.  The puppy will associate the word ‘no’ with bad behavior.  Using the word ‘No’ and actually moving your dog to the proper place will teach your puppy so much more than a spanking ever will.

When you first begin to potty train your puppy, you must take the puppy outside and use the command, ‘go potty’. The puppy must stay outside until he uses the bathroom. You will continue to instruct the puppy to ‘go potty’  the entire time you are outside until he finally does.  Once your puppy uses the bathroom, you should praise the puppy for a good job.  After a while, the puppy will learn that going potty outside makes you happy.

You should choose one specific spot outside for potty training.  Make sure to choose the spot wisely as your puppy will always associate this spot with going potty.

The way you treat your puppy during the training as well as how you praise him will have a positive affect on command potty training.  When you say the words, ‘go potty’, make sure that you are precise and clear. Some puppies may hear the word as ‘no’ if you are not clear.

You may also choose a different word or phrase such as ‘potty’ or ‘do your job’ .  This will make it sound less like ‘no potty’.  Your puppy will learn any command words you decide to use.

The most important thing to remember with command training is to be consistent.  Do not use different phrases or words that should mean the same thing.  Your puppy will not understand this and will become confused.

When using any type of command training, you should use praise your puppy using small puppy-sized treats.  This  helps reinforce a good job and gives your puppy extra help associating the command with what you want them to do.

Command housebreaking a puppy can be done indoors or outdoors. If you prefer the puppy to urinate outdoors, this will work well. If you prefer the dog to urinate on paper or puppy pads indoors, simply place the puppy on the pad and instruct him to potty.  Just remember that repetition is the key. A puppy as well as an older dog wants to please their owners.  With a little patience and understanding, potty training will happen in no time at all.  Once the puppy is completely potty trained, the commands will no longer be necessary.
