Dry Dog Food vs. Canned Dog Food

There are many different brands of dry dog food and canned dog food.  Many dogs can be quite picky about the brand of dry dog food they will eat, while just about all dogs will eat any brand of canned food.  The reason for such preference by the dogs is that in case of canned food items, the moisture is about seventy to eighty per cent but in the case of dry food, it is only about ten per cent.  Canned dog food is also more like people food.

If you view dry and canned dog food in the terms of nutrients, most often the dry dog food contains nearly ninety per cent of the daily nutrients a dog needs whereas the canned food items usually contain a much lesser percent of a dog’s recommended daily nutrients. This is mainly because canned dog food is made from soy products that are structured  to look like meat pieces, while many dry dog foods are soybean and rice based.

To make up the nutritional balance, the dog has to eat more amounts of canned dog food thandry dog food. Compare the cost factor related to the different amount that the dog must eat. Canned dog food is much more costly than dry dog food.  Also, since a dog must eat more canned dog food than dry, it can cause them to be overweight.  

Some dry dog foods are made from corn.  Some beef based or chicken based dog food comes in cans along with mineral and vitamin supplements that are suited for the upkeep of the dog’s health status. Larger dogs that weigh more than thirty pounds need to be fed semi-moist dog food or, more preferrably, dry dog food to satisfy the food receptors in their stomach.  The larger dogs would need to eat more moist food or canned food to satisfy this criteria.  While the smaller sized dogs may have a satisfactory level of nutrients if fed moist food items, the caloric density of the dry food should not be forgotten. Enriched dry dog food should always be the preferred food choice for your dog.
